Simonton resident Kevin Guidry just completed his Eagle Scout project and gave one of Fulshear’s oldest landmarks a new look. Along with fellow scouts from Troop 1003, Guidry built and installed two new benches Saturday at Fulshear Black Cemetery. The cemetery, established in 1826, had been overgrown and run down.
A couple of months ago, Guidry contacted the Lions about his Eagle Scout project. The project bloomed from there. The Lions had been helping with restoration by pruning shrubs, removing rotting fencing and repairing tombstones, and the benches were the next logical step.
While Troop 103 was installing the benches, talk turned to the historical nature of this cemetery, located just east of City Hall, and the need to preserve it. The next phase is to create a meditation garden around the benches, plant a magnolia tree, and construct an entrance gate. The Lions are looking into the possibility of the cemetery being listed as a Texas Historical Site.
