Get Ready to Bocce! Leagues Forming Now in Fulshear

BOCCE BALL COMES TO FULSHEAR CREEK CROSSING

Reader’s Note:  From feedback we’ve received, some of “us Texans” don’t know how to say “Bocce”.  The game is Italian, and it is pronounced “Bochy”.

Bocci Leagues Forming Now! Come out and see what it's all about!Fulshear Creek Crossing developer Doug Konopka, of DHK Development, Inc., known for his emphasis on the unique, has built a bocce court for his residents and the enjoyment of surrounding area residents.

Fulshear Creek Crossing is hosting a Bocce Ball Festival and Demonstration on March 21 at 1:00 p.m. “Our goal is to eventually have several local bocce teams, which will compete against each other in an area league,” said Mr. Konopka.

Heralded as the oldest known sport in the world, bocce, in its earliest form, was practiced by the Egyptians as early as 5,000 B.C. From Egypt it made its way to Greece and from there to Rome and eventually all of Southern Europe. The word bocce derives from the Vulgate Latin bottia, meaning boss.

Thanks to Italian immigrants at the turn of the century, bocce has come to flourish in the United States. The popularity has risen in America with some 25,000,000 enthusiasts throughout the country today. Next to soccer and golf, bocce is the third most participated sport in the world. This is a game for the entire family.

The festival will be held at the Lodge at Fulshear Creek Crossing on March 21, 2010 at 1:00pm. The event will feature bocce demonstrations, activities for the kids and Italian foods and refreshments. David DiPuma, organizer of the bocce tournaments at Houston’s annual Italian Festival, will lead the event. For more information call Tracy Boyd at 713-961-0033 or visit FulshearCreekCrossing.com.

By Kristy Stephens, Daughter of Mike McCann

On Saturday, May 15th, the highly anticipated and successful Bike for Mike is back for its 2nd annual event throughout our great community. With over 400 participants last year and the event receiving such rave reviews, it’s expected to bring even more cyclists to the area, with all funds directly benefitting the Fulshear Beautification program. Current plans with the Michael T. McCann Foundation Board is to update the Fulshear historic cemetery with rod iron fencing and landscaping along with neighboring cemeteries.

There are three routes for riders of all skill levels, plus a 3 mile ride for the kids and family.

My father never met a stranger, and it is wonderful to open up the vineyard and our home to other cyclists celebrating his memory and the Fulshear community. Our goal is to become bigger and better, making this a favorite ride and annual destination for many.

As the daughter of Michael and Carole McCann, I was truly honored and humbled by the opportunity to create an annual bike ride in memory of my father benefitting the City of Fulshear he so loved.  The first weekend of May last year was unbelievably memorable, motivating, and for his family, a magical tribute.  The event would not have been possible without the tremendous support, involvement, and efforts offered through the City of Fulshear, generous businesses, churches, clubs, and the many community volunteers. It was most definitely a city wide project, not possible without Fulshear’s support, as we were portrayed to the over 400 cyclists, a shining bright community.

For more information regarding the ride and to register, please visit the website at www.bikeformikefulshear.com. And as with any event, many volunteers are needed in the community to help make this another great success!  If interested, please email info@bikeformikefulshear.com
